Emerging Trends in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

Our research coordinator Soumyadeep Som presents his latest Global Health paper, edited by Laura Coburn, on the rising public‑health threat of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. The project explores how HMPV, a major cause of respiratory infections, is increasingly affecting children, the elderly, and immunocompromised populations, particularly in the post-COVID-19 era.

Despite advances in surveillance and molecular diagnostics, critical gaps remain:

✅ Urban–rural disparities in diagnostic access

✅ Limited public awareness and under-reporting

✅ No licensed vaccine, leaving high-risk groups vulnerable

✅ Rising hospitalisation rates during seasonal surges

The paper calls for:

• Strengthening nationwide HMPV surveillance systems

•   Expanding equitable diagnostic access, especially in rural regions

•  Accelerating vaccine development through mRNA and recombinant platforms

•  Investing in public health awareness and early detection strategies

  
  

By bridging epidemiology, public policy, and health equity, this research highlights how evidence-based strategies can reduce disease burden and strengthen pandemic preparedness.
