Are we sleepwalking into a new nicotine epidemic? đźšđź’¨ While traditional smoking is on the decline, a new, colorful, and candy-flavored threat is taking its place.

The rapid rise of e-cigarette use among teenagers is a growing public health concern in Europe. If left unchecked, this trend risks creating an entirely new generation addicted to nicotine, directly undermining the EU’s ambitious target of a “smoke-free generation” by 2040. 🛑🇪🇺
Why is this happening? 🤔
📱 Digital Normalization: Influencer promotions and targeted social media advertising are normalizing vaping and increasing its appeal to young people.
🍉 Deceptive Designs: Appealing product designs and flavored products mask the real dangers of the habit.
đź’Ľ Industry Lobbying & Myths:Â Strong lobbying by the vaping industry, combined with the widespread public misperception that vapes are significantly less harmful than traditional smoking, has slowed down decisive regulatory action.
How do we fix it? Targeted and modernized regulation is urgently needed, and policymakers must stop treating e-cigarettes like traditional tobacco products. Our key policy recommendations include: 📋⚖️
đźš« Regulating Digital Spaces:Â Extend advertising rules to ban influencer promotions and regulate social media advertising.
📦 Standardizing Products: Mandate plain packaging and standardized designs featuring prominent health warnings to reduce youth appeal.
📢 Correcting the Narrative: Launch targeted campaigns with evidence-based messaging to counter the myth that vaping is harmless.
🔍 Ensuring Transparency: Restrict industry influence on policy by enforcing stricter transparency rules on lobbying activities.
